CHAPPELL HILL CULTURAL HERITAGE GROUP
The Chappell Hill Cultural Heritage Group (CHCHG) in Chappell Hill, Washington County, Texas. is an all volunteer non-profit group made up of former residents of the community. We have proudly served the Chappell Hill community since 2007 with annual Black History exhibits, essay contests and Memorial Day celebrations.
Each year, we present a Memorial Day program that includes volunteer guest speakers, musical tributes, a wreath laying ceremony, student essay readings and the sounding of TAPS. The organization is committed to honoring all the lives sacrificed in order to preserve our freedoms. Among the most important purposes of our organization is to help students of all ages understand the true meaning of Memorial Day and why it is celebrated. We estimate that approximately 25% of the youth in our town are unable to answer basic questions about this important holiday. Many students are unaware of why this holiday is celebrated, or the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and equally important, the symbolic meaning of our American flag. CHCHG established an annual essay contest as an opportunity for students, grade 4-8, to participate and learn through writing essays and creating drawings. We believe that this kind of participation helps reinforce a deeper understanding of the holiday, builds self confidence, strengthens communities, and encourages patriotism. A 5th grade student wrote these words as part of his essay: "For some years now, my family and I would go to the cemetery to stand over a piece of land with a stone at the top of it. While standing there in silence, no one talked, and as I watched my dad with tears in his eyes, I would wonder, what are we doing here, why do we have to come to such a place? After my parents explained to me that my grandfather, Fred Douglas Witchet, was buried there, not because of his age, but because he was killed in the Vietnam War. (My grandfather served in 3 wars, WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.) Now, I understand why my father had tears in his eyes." We are very proud of the efforts of CHCHG to make our community a better place. We invite you to be a part of this American tradition. We are asking for your financial support because we believe that everyone has a stake in the youth of America.
