Black History Exhibition: “African Americans Military Achievements and Accomplishments”
In celebration of Black history, month let’s take a moment to reflect back on the origin of this great month. The precursor to Black history month was “Negro History Week”. This was created in 1926 in Association for the study of Negro Life and History they announce the second week of February to be the week of observation.
At Kent State in February 1970, the current Black history month was held and it continued to spread across the country to states through educational institutions. Today it celebrated in several countries around the world.
Our 2018 exhibition introduced the military service of African Americans from Chappell Hill, (Washington County), Texas and beyond. It highlights the incredible experiences, accomplishments, and achievements of these servicemen and women who defended our nation. For example, African American men signed up for the Tuskegee pilot training program at Tuskegee University. The U.S. Military began training African-American men to become pilots. The military chose the Tuskegee Institute based on its commitment and facilities for aeronautical training. Based on its successes, the squadron proved that African-American pilots could handle the rigors of air combat
During this black history month please take a moment and reflect back on all of the contributions by the service men and women who have helped serve this country.

2011:
TOOLS, TEXTILES AND THOSE WHO USED THEM
Cotton was the most important commodity in Chappell Hill, Texas after the Civil War—and Black Americans played a significant role in the success of this product.
This year's exhibit explains the tools and textiles most often used by Black American cotton farmers in Chappell Hill. These basic items were often purchased locally from Harry P. Lesser and Sons' General Store. Some items lasted only one work season (i.e. cotton picking time) and were bought using in-store credit accounts.Nevertheless, each item was essential in the struggle to make a living and to improve the economic circumstances of the worker's families and their communities. In spite of these hardships, Black Americans were determined to maintain a strong and vital community passing on a legacy of hard work, faith and courage. Before cotton's decline in the 1960s, Black Americans worked hard using skill, innovation, and diligence. The various tools used, the efforts whole families made to earn a living together, and the teamwork and organisational skill required–these are all part of the Black American Cultural Heritage. February is the month set aside to appreciate past contributions made by Black Americans. Let us also look forward to even greater contributions in the future. |
